Youth Support Coordinator (YSC)

The Youth Support Coordinator is a program funded by the Queensland State Government Department of Communities as part of the Education Training Reforms for the Future (ETRF) and is designed to provide suport to young people who have recently disengaged from school or who are at risk of disengaging from school.

Students can talk confidentially and safely with the YSC, who is linked to the school, but is separate from the school's structure.

The role of the YSC is to:

• Help young people and their families resolve issues that may lead to early school leaving.
• Help young people develop social and personal skills needed to live in the community.
• Help link schools and young people to the community so better resources can be provided.

The YSC can:

• Support a young person with decision-making and goal-setting.
• Assist the young person with any relationship issues concerning teachers, parents or friends.
• Mediate with students, parents and teachers.
• Refer the young person to other agencies that can assist with finance, accommodation, employment, training or health.
• Provide individual counselling and group work.
